Discover the local area's diverse and fascinating history at

Sweetheart Abbey, New Abbey. Discover the tale of devotion behind the abbey’s evocative name. Monks named it Dulce Cor in memory of Lady Dervorgilla, who founded the abbey in tribute to her beloved husband, John Balliol. Listed in the Readers Digest book “The Most Amazing Places to Visit in Britain”.

Caerlaverock Castle, Caerlaverock. One of Scotland's great medieval fortresses. Its imposing sandstone walls, its moat and unique triangular shape rank it as one of the most powerful looking castles in Scotland. Also listed in the Readers Digest book “The Most Amazing Places to Visit in Britain”

Drumlanrig Castle, Thornhill. This spectacular castle has 120 rooms, 17 turrets and four towers and from your very first glance you’ll know you’re entering a special place. Special enough, in fact, that the producers of Outlander recently used the Castle for filming their second series!
