Comfortable, and calm, a great place to relax and unwind.
Jenny, Derbyshire, May 2024
Gorgeous visit. Wonderful Flat. Fabulous food
Elizabeth & Pete, Australia, June 2024
We arrived at the cottage at the tail end of a 3 week trip in Scotland and I was coming down with an illness. But staying in the quiet and well appointed row house was the antidote I needed: super quiet; great kitchen, bed, and garden. We would absolutely book again. Caerlaverlock Castle was fabulous.
Caroline & Nick, California, July 2024
Lots to see and fine weather too!
Martin & Julia, Cirencester, July 2024
Lovely peaceful location. Nice wee flat with bonus of having a sunny little garden at the back. Didn’t need to use the burner at this time of year but bet it will make the place very cosy and snug in Winter. The bed felt very hard but was surprisingly comfortable!
Gillian & Barry, Fife, August 2024
Lovely location and awesome views. Property was very comfortable and cosy. We’re allergic to feathers so Sue made sure there were no issues. She took great care to think of our wellbeing. We are an older couple so comfort and ease of getting around the flat are important to us. The flat was well equipped and tastefully decorated. Thanks for a lovely stay.
Robert & Helen, Stirling, September 2024
Came here from the Cumnock Tryst – superb music festival. We would thoroughly recommend. Thanks to Sue & Rob for another wonderful week, a good mix of old favourites like Kirkcudbright & new places like Mersehead where the geese had just arrived from Svalbard and there were also two Snow Geese (a first for us!!). Did all the Burns’ sites, in Dumfries this time – all highly recommended. Very sad as usual to be going.
Linda & Will, London, October 2024

Thanks very much Sue & Rob. Finally got to see the Ruthwell Cross and went to Dumfries House (beautiful). Caerlaverock as stunning as ever and we were so relieved that geese numbers don’t seem to badly affected this year. Very sad to be going and hope to be back very soon.

Had a fab week in your lovely cottage. Great area and plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. Will definitely recommend to others. Hopefully we will be able to return in the near future.
J & A – East Kilbride – June 2021
The Flat is a lovely place to come home to at the end of each day. So cosy and warm. The geese and the swans are just wonderful at this time of year especially the Barnacle Geese in such large numbers. We also saw a few Red Kite yesterday around Loch Ken and last Saturday went up Criffel with dusting of snow and ice. So overall a great week and sorry to be going home. Could easily spend more time here. All those Galloway Hills to do and also Greenland White Fronted Geese to track down as we didn’t mange to see those this time. Hope to come back again one day.
J & A – Cheshire, January 2020
This property contains everything you need. We wanted for nothing, beautiful scenery and walks right on the doorstep. The Nith Hotel does delicious meals and the staff and locals are really friendly when we went in for a drink. Coming back to the log fire was a treat. Lovely stay and I would highly recommend.
Elena H – Galashiels, December 2019
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Lovely cosy flat contained everything we needed and set in a great location at Glencaple. Close to our relatives in Dumfries and lovely scenery around Caerlaverock and surrounds. Would definitely recommend it to any couple/single looking for accommodation just outside Dumfries. Thanks Sue and Rob.
Barry J – Queensland, December 2019
Flat very nice. Everything you need and very quiet. Just what we needed. Thanks.
Tricia and Dave – August 2019
Lovely Flat with everything you need and very peaceful.
Patricia R – Creetown, August 2019
The cottage was in a great location – very peaceful with a lovely walk along the river bank (when the rain stopped!). The Nith Hotel on the corner was great value for excellent food & the Boathouse café/restaurant across the road was lovely for a drink with great views. The cottage itself was perfect for 2 people. There was a spacious bedroom & reasonable sized sitting room. The unusual bathroom layout was fine & the shower was good & spacious. The bed was very comfortable although the sofa was a little old (Ed: sofa has now been replaced). The heating was easy to operate which we had to use as the weather wasn’t great despite being August. It was easy to access using the code provided. Dumfries was a short drive away for shopping/supermarkets.
Andrea M – Warrington, August 2019
This is a lovely holiday Flat which has a warm and welcoming quality and beautiful surroundings. It’s also situated in an ideal place as there’s plenty to do within the immediate locality, and is also within a short driving distance from the beaches and other places.
Anon – June 2019
We enjoyed a brilliant stay in this cosy flat in just the most perfect little village, everything we needed and ideally situated with good food nearby, beautiful scenery and interesting things to do whatever the weather!
Trudy D – Cambridgeshire, June 2019
Next to the river Nith estuary. Thousands of geese. Nice boathouse cafe on the pier and the Nith Hotel for a good dinner. For a quiet cozy rural village experience. Heartily recommend the apartment. Thanks to our very attentive landlady.
Mike H – April 2019
.Very warm and comfortable and well-equipped. Our main aim was to visit WWT bird reserve so seeing hundreds of wildfowl from the flat was a welcome bonus.
We intend to book this flat again.
Arthur W, January 2019
Good view over the river and surrounding countryside. Ideal for bird-watching, which is what we went for. Only a short drive from Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve at Caerlaverock. In all a really enjoyable week away from home. We have booked again for next year
Patric and Ann – Dingwall, November 2018
The Flat is cozy and in beautiful surroundings. Hope to come again.
Jenny – Derbyshire, October 2018
Really well-equipped holiday let that feels like a home. I think we will be back!
Pip and Sue – Sheffield, August 2018
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning soon. Thank you.
Liz and Mike – Corbridge, May 2018
We really enjoyed our 3 night stay here. The kitchen is small, but has everything you need. There’s a hotel just on the corner if you want a break from cooking or just want to pop in for a drink. At the quay, which you can see from the front door, there’s a new shop & cafe opening mid-April 2018. It was a bit chilly when we stayed, but there’s electric radiators in the lounge & bedroom to keep you cosy. It’s only the bathroom where we felt the cold even with the towel rail on [please note: towel rail is now fully functional]. The shower is huge though! Cross over the road from the flat and you can walk alongside the river. The view is lovely across to the hills on the other side. 10 mins drive away is Caerlaverock Castle and a nature reserve too for a pleasant easy walk. Drive back up the road to Dumfries to cross the river and head towards scenic Rockcliffe. There’s plenty of other places to visit along the coastal road to the artists’ town of Kirkcudbright (about 50mins drive).
Chris & Kat A – North Yorkshire, April 2018
Well equipped and good position within the village. Easy parking in front of the property. Good pub/restaurant if needed within walking distance. Lovely area to explore. Castles, NT/Heritage properties and scenic walks. Lots of information leaflets in the flat. Highly recommended.
Jill S – Shrewsbury, September 2017
We spent a comfortable week in this beautifully refurbished cottage which was well equipped and warm. We walked across to the quayside every day to see the fishermen and the bird life. The view from the door was beautiful and despite the rain we found something to do every day. The food at the Pub nearby was tasty and good value.
David K – September 2017
We spent 7 nights in this apartment at Glencaple, just south of Dumfries. The apartment was very well set up and maintained. The kitchen was well appointed for cooking meals. The location is great for exploring Dumfries and Galloway and even the Scottish Borders. The owners restaurant recommendations were good. Throughout the process of booking to arriving, the owners were prompt with replies and very helpful.
Pam O – May 2017
Beautiful apartment, good value for money, everything you’d want for a comfortable holiday. Quiet, well furnished, spotless and excellent communication with owners. Great view across river from both front rooms. Great for anyone interested in bird-watching, 1500 Barnacle Geese visible from windows when we were there in February.
Mick T – February 2017
Very comfortable with everything you need and a great location. Would love to stay there again.
Barry C – January 2017
What a lovely apartment this is. It has everything you could want and more. All the fixtures and fittings are of a very high standard and you really feel spoiled. The area is beautiful and so many places to visit in a short distance. The setting couldn’t be more perfect overlooking the estuary. I must mention the Nith Hotel next door. If you don’t feel like cooking you will not beat the quality of the food and service and all at a very competitive price. We were made to feel very welcome by everyone. I would highly recommend for so many reasons. As Arnie says, we will be back.
Howard S –January 2017
A really really nice property, felt spacious and had everything could possibly need during our stay. My holiday emergency bag of scissors, cloths etc didn’t get even unpacked! The stove was easy to use and warmed the room up easily as did the radiators when it went chilly at night. Kitchen had everything we needed to cook and was “full size” equipment not travel sized as in many other places we’ve stayed. Shower hot and powerful. View out of bedroom and living room right over the river. A few minutes drive brings you to Caerlaverock nature reserve with loads of birds to see as well as walks. Dumfries only 10 minutes drive and has a variety of supermarkets plus easy access to A75 for trips further afield. Definitely a holiday cottage to visit again!
Jennifer H – January 2017
Very nice and peaceful location. Everything we needed for a short stay was there. Very convenient for exploring the area. Nice to get home from golf and have a drink in the garden.
Andy M – July 2016
We were impressed with the accommodation . We stayed over Christmas and as the flat is very well equipped we found all we needed to cook our Christmas dinner! The log fire was very cosy and much appreciated. We joined folk in the village for their Carol Service on Christmas Eve and were given a warm welcome. This is a lovely area to explore and the flat has wonderful views over the Estuary. We spent an interesting day at the Wetlands Centre which has a cafe and shop. The cafe was very welcome with good hot drinks and food for a wet December day. We certainly hope to return in the spring when hopefully the weather will have improved.
I’ve no hesitation in recommending this apartment. It was roomy, comfortable, clean and well-equipped – what’s more, all the equipment worked! The location is wonderful for bird-watching, in fact we hardly needed to go to the special bird reserves. The estuary is a constant, ever-changing delight. Shops nearby, friendly folks, and Sue was helpful and informative. We were a bit too early for the flocks of geese overhead, but there’s always another time…
Alison L – September 2015
The flat is warm and cosy, very clean and comfortable. The position is great with lovely views across the estuary. Its really lovely to be able to walk to the shop in the morning to buy a paper and the café servers the most wonderful full Scottish breakfast we can certainly recommend it!! The owners have furnished and equipped the flat with great care and to a high standard. All the big things are done well but its the little things that count and those are too many to list. We had a wonderful few days and will certainly be returning.
Chrissy B – March 2015
This cottage suited us well – a small garden with plenty of sunshine. located near the local shop and bus stop, good cycling and Dumfries a few miles away. We visited several nature and bird reserves, a number of historic sites, Dumfries town with its Burns connections.
The setting is glorious, the comfort excellent and we recommend it as a first-class base to explore an uncrowded and little-known part of the UK. We found a red squirrel a matter of feet from us in one country park, the site of the creation of the first bicycle, and the first ever savings bank.’
Andy, Croydon – December 2014
The Flat, Glencaple, is very attractive and comfortable. The owner has furnished it with a lot of care and attention to detail. The kitchen is small, but well laid out and very well equipped. The sunny back garden is a bonus – we ate lunch outside in the September sunshine. The location is very peaceful with lovely views over the Nith Estuary. The shop on the quay has a good stock and the staff are very helpful. We didn’t try the coffee shop, but it looked nice. There seems to be a regular bus service, although we didn’t use it. Can recommend this if you like walking, cycling, bird watching or just pottering about.
