The area around Glencaple has an abundance of wildlife, some great places to see it are:

Eskrigg Nature Reserve, Lockerbie. Quaas Loaning, Lockerbie DG11 1HY. A small Nature Reserve on the outskirts of Lockerbie where you have a very good chance of seeing red squirrels 

Mersehead RSPB. Mersehead Farm, Dumfries DG2 8AH. An extensive wetland and saltmarsh area, a haven for breeding waders, wintering waterfowl and year-round bird and wildlife-watching. Spring is particularly magical, when the wet meadows fill with lapwings and skylarks 

Red Kite Trail, Laurieston. An exciting nature watching opportunity to view spectacular red kites in lovely scenery. 

Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre, Caerlaverock. Caerlaverock DG1 4RS. A rugged and beautiful destination offering open space and tranquil wildlife watching. Wander through wildflower meadows spotting orchids, butterflies and dragonflies, or see our winter migration spectacle. Check out the events listing - there's always something going on.
